6. Classification, Faction, & Ranks

Classification, Faction, & Ranks

On Fighting Dreamers, in addition to being organized by villages, we have what are best referred to as factions.

When you create your character, you need to choose a classification and (optionally) a faction. Keep in mind that even if you pick one at creation, a person's loyalties can change -- meaning that you won't be stuck with your chosen faction forever.

Classification

A character’s classification is simply what kind of ninja they are in terms of residence (and associated loyalty). There are a few different options:

Village Nin: A ninja that is loyal to their village or residence, whether they were born there or not. This loyalty will almost never supercede a ninja’s loyalty to a faction if they’re in one, but it’s not unheard of. Village ninja who are not part of a faction typically have no more authority than is granted to them by the other people within a village, as factions tend to have much more sway as an organized group. They are often viewed as "common ninja" by those in factions.

Wandering Ninja: (Also called "Wanderer Nin" or simple "Wanderers") These are free spirits - they have no ties to any specific village, cause, or faction, and are most often seen as a neutral party. It's not uncommon for villages or factions to ask for the help of a Wanderer, but whether they choose to accept or not is dependent on their personal morals/values and goals. It is important to keep in mind, however, that officially joining a faction (becoming listed as a member) causes you to lose this status - if you’re not affiliated with a village and join a faction, you would either affiliate yourself with the village (if applicable) or you would become a Faction Nin. It’s extremely rare to see a younger wandering ninja, as the odds of a child becoming one without guidance are extremely low. Most wanderers are those that have retired - think Jiraiya. Becoming a Wanderer Nin at creation requires administrative approval, and to become one through RP you must go through the ranks and eventually retire - it’s not an easy task.

Faction Ninja: (Also simply called “Faction Nin”) These are ninja that are not affiliated with a village, but are still part of a faction. In most cases, these ninja will be members of factions that have their home locations within a village. They can choose to take up residence within the village without becoming village nin as long as they reside within designated residential areas of their faction. Alternatively, they will reside within one of the faction’s territories outside of any ninja villages.

Nukenin: (Also known as "Missing Nin[ja]") They are, at their core, criminal, rogue ninja. They are those that have done something, no matter how insignificant, to earn the title of criminal, and have fled any village they may have been associated with. It's important to note that defecting from a village (short of retiring from service) automatically counts as treason, and you would be labeled a Nukenin. There is no particular “direction” when it comes to Nukenin joining or refraining from joining a faction - some do, and some don’t. But a Nukenin within a faction can cause a lot of tension unless it’s a Nukenin-specific faction, so it’s a very risky move.

Factions

A faction is a group of people that share similar ideals or goals. While they don't have to be a hivemind and all feel the same way about everything, they should have ideals or goals that overlap in some fashion. At the very least, being in a faction means you're supporting each other and relying on each other. In an environment where your faction house is the only safe place to be, it's important that you maintain good relationships with the other faction members.

Factions will always have a "home" location - which is usually a ninja village - and a territory, but the territories are just normal locations on the forums. They have to be claimed, either by taking them from another faction, or by being the first to lay claim to it. The method by which a faction chooses to notify others that it's their territory is up to them, but this must be specified on the faction's listing, as well as in the description of the location that they’ve claimed as their territory. It's possible to have outposts positioned within a faction's territory, but that must be communicated to staff so that the respective descriptions are changed to reflect that.

Even if you don’t choose to join a faction at the start, you can do so later through RP, so feel free to simply pick a village and go from there.

Read the Faction Guide for more information.

Ranks

On Fighting Dreamers, a character's rank is not an indicator of power, but of "job experience". Only those that gain enough experience can tack higher letter ranks next to their names. Do keep in mind, however, that this means you should never assume that a low rank means somebody is going to be easy to fight or they'll be weak. It only tells you how much experience they have.

Although the letter rank system's primary use is to show a character's level of experience, those that choose to rank up will get small bonuses for performing certain tasks to help give their characters a slight push.

For the most part, you don’t need to rank up, but certain missions, or even events, may have registration limited by rank, so it doesn’t hurt to work on that on the side (and you can slowly rank up just by RPing without ranks in mind). Additionally, only those that rank up will gain access to limited/forbidden techniques, and other things of that nature.

The letter ranks for Player Characters range from C-SS, with C being the lowest and SS being the highest. The requirements for reaching each rank, as well as the bonuses, are as follows:

*D-Rank - N/A
This rank is only used for NPCs.

C-Rank - N/A. Starting rank.
-Can freely take on missions C-Rank and below
-Able to go on higher-ranked missions if accompanied by another person of the respective rank

B-Rank - 25 RP
-Can freely take on missions B-Rank and below
-Able to go on higher-ranked missions if accompanied by another person of the respective rank
-10 Funds bonus for completing team missions

A-Rank - 55 RP
-Can freely take on missions A-Rank and below
-Able to go on higher-ranked missions if accompanied by another person of the respective rank
-10 Funds bonus for leading C/B-Rank ninja on group missions
-Access to techniques on the limited/restricted list (with approval)

S-Rank - 100 RP
-Can freely take on missions S-Rank and below
-10 Funds bonus for leading C/B-Rank ninja on group missions
-10 Funds bonus for mentorship threads
-Access to techniques on the limited/restricted list (with approval)

SS-Rank - 250 RP
-Can freely take on missions S-Rank and below
-10 Funds bonus for leading C/B-Rank ninja on group missions
-10 Funds bonus for mentorship threads
-Access to techniques on the limited/restricted list (with approval)

That said, if and how these letter ranks affect a faction's hierarchy is up to individual preference.
